Welcome to Shoals!

Shoals is the avenue for sharing individual and collaborative work of philosophers on the topics aligning with MAP’s mission. MAP aims to provide an avenue for both experienced writers and beginners who wish to present philosophical ideas in an accessible and compelling way. We are indebted to the work of Tiffany King and their book Black Shoals. Shoals is the space where multiplicity of traditions and voices in philosophy meet each other in flux.

The editorial team will be accepting submissions on a rolling basis. Our policy is to publish work authored by MAP members first; however, we welcome contributions from non-members as well. Suggested submission length is 1,500 – 2,000 words. Shorter pieces (Between 600 and 1,000 words) and poetry will also be considered for publication.

The types of submissions we are currently seeking:

  • Diversity and Inclusion. Philosophy is one of the least diverse academic disciplines. This topic invites marginalized voices and approaches that challenge conventional ways of doing philosophy.

  • Activism and social struggle. Philosophical inquiries hold untapped potential for social and political transformations. This topic explores how marginalized voices use philosophy to advocate for these transformations.

  • Philosophy in art. Philosophy is not only academic writing! It lives in music, films, photography, and other creative mediums. This topic invites those who spread philosophy through these mediums.

  • Teaching philosophy. Have you diversified your teaching curriculum or tried an alternative way of approaching certain aspects? What worked and what did not? Share with the community!
