Disability Studies

Thursday, Apr. 4, 5 PM,

ENV 120

MAP’s April event is dedicated to the topic of mental disabilities, and we invite everyone to watch and discuss Antonio Santini and Dan Sickles’ documentary Dina (2017). The U.S. documentary grand jury prize winner at Sundance, Dina challenges the standards of documentary filmmaking. The audience has a chance to live with Dina and her fiancé Scott, accompanying them on the journey to intimacy, connection, and mutual acceptance.

Please join us for this film night and the discussion!

Trans Studies

Tuesday, March 26, 2 PM,

ENV 225A

Please join us for our next event, “The Question Concerning Endocrinology,” in collaboration with Dr. Violet Ann Toole, Dr. Adam Briggle, and the Transgender Philosophy class, on Tuesday, March 26th, from 2 to 3:20 p.m. in ENV225A (the Philosophy department conference room).

We will discuss Dr. Briggle’s interview with Dr. Toole and ask that participants listen to the audio of the interview before coming to the event (please email saralouise.tonge@unt.edu or adam.briggle@unt.edu for the audio ). The interview focuses on Dr. Toole’s dissertation concerning Judith Butler and transgender medical care.

All are invited regardless of gender identity, though we ask that participants be respectful of the foregrounding of transgender voices in the room.

Read & Discuss

Friday, Jan. 26, 3 PM,

ENV 225A

We want to invite all undergrad and graduate students to our first event of the semester, Read & Discuss, this Friday (1/26) at 3 pm at ENV 225A! At these events, we aim to provide a safe space for all minorities to discuss a philosophical essay, highlighting minority thinkers and philosophers.

No prior reading is required as we will spend the first 15 minutes reading the article and then discussing it (If you’d like to read ahead of time, feel free to email us for a copy!)

This week, we will look at a section from George Yancy’s “White Gazes: What It Feels Like to Be an Essence,” which focuses on whiteness and its relation to philosophy and the experience of POC.

If you are an instructor, we would appreciate your support in getting the word out. I have attached a slide-show-ready graphic to this email.
